The music curriculum is a spiral curriculum, with the key skills and the inter-related elements of music being taught repeatedly.
Early Years Foundation Stage
Children in Reception should access music by developing the key skills specified in the area of learning for Expressive Arts and Design:
Exploring and using media and materials: Children sing songs, make music through dance and experiment with ways of changing them.
Being imaginative: Children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. They should represent their ideas, thoughts and feelings through design technology, art, music, dance, role-play and stories.
Key Stage One and Key Stage Two
At Eaton Primary School we take a whole school approach to teaching music by following the Music Express Online scheme of work. The curriculum coverage overview gives an outline of each of the units taught in different year groups, as provided by the Music Express Online year plans (see www.musicexpress.co.uk). Individual teachers might enhance their cross-curricular topic work with songs and musical activities at their own discretion. Not all units listed may be taught across a year group, however all aspects of the music curriculum will be covered throughout the year.
