Physical Education (PE)

Our Curriculum Drivers are to promote resilience, develop communication and ensure all pupils have access to all learning possibilities both in and out of the classroom.

Intent

Our Curriculum Intent is for pupils to know more, do more and learn more.

At Eaton Primary School, we aim to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we intend to:

  • Nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best.
  • Provide pupils with a range of active experiences and clubs.
  • Model to pupils how to improve their performance by showing them skills of control
  • Encourage pupils to play and work with others
  • Ensure pupils develop and explore skills with increasing controls and coordination
  • Help pupils obtain the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as evaluating and modestly celebrating their own successes.
  • Ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond.
  • Assess pupil learning:  analyse and interpret results, to inform future planning
  • Educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices.
  • Ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and continue to support our children’s well-being.
  • Maintain links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure the children and families receive the support and knowledge they need.

How do we know what children have learned?

  • Questioning
  • Pupil book study
  • talking to teachers
  • Low stakes ‘drop-in’ observations
  • Quizzing and retrieval practise
  • Video analysis of own performance using ipads?
  • Feedback and marking
  • Progress matches the curriculum intent

How do pupils learn

The scheme of work has been written and is based on the aims of the National Curriculum, to ensure that children are given a wealth of opportunities to develop their physical skills as well as developing the whole child.  Progression of both skills and knowledge (including vocabulary) has been mapped from reception to Y6 by the subject lead so that they meet the end of Key Stage objectives of the National Curriculum.

The lessons provide progressive activities that are designed to inspire and engage the pupils, whilst also allowing them to explore, develop skills and embed knowledge. Each year the children revisit an area where they use their retrieval practices to remember the skills that they had learnt previously and build upon them. Scaffolded tasks provide activities with simple changes to appropriately challenge and include all of our pupils.

What do we teach

EYFS

Pupils within EYFS undertake daily physical exercise within a specialised external play area, including a low-level trim-trail.

  • Multi Skills: Travelling, Balance, Coordination
  • Gymnastics
  • Multi Skills: Sending and Receiving
  • Summer Games
  • Striking and Fielding

Key Stage 1 and 2:

All pupils from Early Years to Year 6 have at least 2 hours of planned physical exercise each week.  PE lessons are carried out by our PE coach.  All pupils in KS2 take part in competitive House Games every Friday afternoon which enhances the range of sporting opportunities across the school.  This is led by the PE lead and the school’s House Captains. KS1 pupils participate in the Pioneer Scheme at the same time and this includes physical challenges and games.

Pupils in Year 3 learn to swim at the fantastic UEA swimming pool; Year 6 have a multi-activity residential in which they undertake adventurous activities.

During the summer term, we hold an Activity Week.  Sports providers from the local area come into school to run workshops for our pupils.  This includes Krav Maga, Cheerleading, Tennis (from the LTA) to name a few.  This gives pupils the opportunity to participate and try out a wide range of sports and activities.  During this week the school also holds Sports Days to introduce healthy competition whilst encouraging participation and enjoyment.

We have a range of sports clubs led by visiting professionals after school and in our Breakfast Club and After-School Club provision there are always sporting activities to participate in.  The school has sports teams which compete with other schools, for example, our football teams.

The school participates in City Sports events and is a member of the Schools Sport Partnership.  This means that children regularly have the opportunity to participate in sporting events, for example:  multi-skills, cross-country, tennis.

Annually, some of our pupils take part in the Evolution Academy Cup, a sporting event for all of our Trust schools.
